ELMER RISING ART Framed Elmer Rising Print 41/100 Pencil Signed Massachusetts Artist FREE SHIPPING Image size 7 1/4 x 9 Framed size 17 1/2 x 13 1/4 Black Wood Frame FREE SHIPPING IN USA ELMER RISING Elmer Rising was born in Rockland, Maine, in 1906. After graduating from Rockland High School he attended Higgins Classical Institute and Hebron Academy, where he prepared for a baseball scholarship to Dartmouth College. In his senior year at Hebron, he slipped on the ice and dislocated his let shoulder, his pitching arm and never pitched again. After graduating from Hebron he attended and graduated from the School of Practical Art in Boston, now the Art Institute of Boston/Lesley University. After graduating from art school, he began a 42 year career, (1930-1972) at Harvard University. He first worked at the Peabody Museum, where his first assignment was to illustrate "Up from the Apes", MacMillan, 1932, by Harvard Anthropologist Ernest Hooton. He also illustrated Principles of Anthropology", Henry Holt, 1942, by Harvard Professors Eliot Chapple & Carleton Coon, . He continued illustrating archeological and anthropological subjects until 1941, when he transferred to Harvard's Division of Engineering and Applied Physics to work as a Technical Illustrator until he retired in 1972. He died in 1987. One of his major contributions to Harvard was his drawing of the large official Harvard Map, which for many years was on display to the public, even after he retired. Since it needed to be updated on a regular basis, and there was no one to do it, it has been placed in the Harvard archives. Among others, his originals are owned by Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine, the Portland (Maine) Art Museum, Monhegan Island (Maine) Art Museum, Bowdoin College Art Museum, Bates College Art Museum, Harvard University and Hebron Academy. read more
