It's too small. Too crowded. Too primitive, said State Medical Examiner Julia Goodin. When the bodies of 11 immigrants were discovered in a Denison railcar last October, and again when nine people were killed in a January crash near Menlo, bodies were kept in a refrigerated trailer in the Broadlawns parking lot. In a year, all that will change, when the medical examiner moves into a $7 million wing of the $52 million Iowa Laboratories Facility being constructed on 22 acres of the Des Moines Area Community College campus in Ankeny. The facility will house the State Medical Examiner's Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and other labs. Goodin was promised a new morgue when she took over the vacant position in 1999. Two years later, she said, her office was so short-handed that some unexplained deaths had gone unexamined. She threatened to quit, saying the office's professional integrity was on the line should something go wrong because of inadequate facilities.

72nd St. 391-2171 move, Goodin and her staff make do. They grumble and growl about the lack of room as they're maneuvering in the tight spaces between bodies and tables and walls and each other. "We're just trying to survive down there," Goodin said. Storage shelves overflow with boxes of supplies.
An open area of floor near a wall-length sink barely has room for two steel autopsy tables. The room is shared with the Polk County Medical Examiner's Office, so when two tables are being used at once and as many as a dozen pathologists, assistants and law enforcement officers are there, "we're often tripping over ourselves," Goodin said. "We've had 21 people in here," said Deputy Medical Examiner Dennis Klein. Ventilation is poor. The smell from decomposing bodies sneaks down the hallway of the Broadlawns basement.
Funeral home practitioners come in, wheeling in another body to be placed in the cooler. be Pathologists sign in the new arrival just feet away from a body being autopsied. "That isn't supposed to happen, Klein said. "When you think of a morgue facility, there should be a whole process of when a body is received, a cataloging of all belongings. "There is usually another whole area of the facility where all of this would take place.
What you don't want is all these processes to be happening at the same time you're doing an autopsy." That won't be a problem in the new morgue. Bodies will be dropped off in a drive-through garage at the back of the building. They will go through a secure check-in area and will be immediately weighed and placed in the cooler, down a hall from the autopsy room. A second, smaller autopsy room will handle badly decomposed or diseased bodies. A closed-circuit television will Deaths and Funerals KESSEY -Laura, COMPLETE age 29 NOTICE yrs.

Not a day goes by, you're in our thoughts and our hearts. Your spirit lives on in each of us. We pray that we will see you again some day! Love Always and Forever, Mary, Children and Grandchildren TO EDDIE 5 years, my dear since you have died and gone away to me it's still like yesterday I still see the smile upon your face, and it fills me with so much grace. I hear your voice singing the carols around the house. I remember how you'd wait, to see me decorate the house.
I'd see you get your harmonica out, and play it all about. I remember all the cards you gave, especially with all the love. I am so grateful dear, I have all these memories. They are still so fresh in my mind, they have not diminished with time so my dear till we meet, in my prayers you do remain. Missing you at Christmas.
