Surviving daughter of DC mansion murders posts tributes to family (2024)

A surviving daughter of the family who were murdered at their $2million Washington D.C. mansion has posted touching tributes to her parents - while it's revealed their alleged killer's trial has been delayed until December.

Katerina Savopoulos, 19, was not at home when her father Savas, 46, mother Amy,47, brother Philip, 10, and housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa, 57, died after Daron Wint allegedly held them captive as part of a ransom plot.

The 34 year old, who is in custody, is accused of stabbing and strangling them to death before setting their house on fire.

As prosecutors prepare for the murder trial, the grieving teenager uploaded pictures of her brother, mother and father to Facebook along with heartfelt messages.

Alongside a picture of Philip, she wrote: 'Would do anything to see that smile again. Love and miss you.'

On the same day she posted a picture of her being held in her father's arms as a youngster.

With it she wrote the message: 'You will always be my hero and my role model and I will love you and miss you so much. Thank you for teaching me courage, loyalty and how to believe in myself. Love you to the moon and back Baba.

In May, she shared an image of her as a child with her mother and revealed one of her favorite sayings was: 'In a while crocodile'.

She then wrote: 'Thank you for being the best mom I could have ever asked for. I love you mommy and will miss you everyday.'

Prosecutors say Wint held the family captive inside their home and demanded $40,000 he allegedly beat and stabbed the family to death before setting the house on fire.

He was arrested in Washington D.C. a week after the slayings after a nationwide manhunt which led police to his girlfriend's apartment in Brooklyn, New York, and back to the capital.

Police recovered more than $30,000 in cash and money orders from the two vehicles, including $20,000 from the truck, and Wint's brother told police that Wint had given him the money

As they searched the scene, investigators claim they found Win't DNA on a pizza crust left inside the house.

But a witness has claimed he saw a man with short hair running away from the family's stolen Porsche in the aftermath.

Defense lawyers say they now want to take to the bystander who says he saw a suspect with short, well-groomed hair, WUSA 9 reported, while Wint has long, braided hair.

Police say it was Wint who was seen running away from the vehicle, but his public defenders want the name of the witness so they can check out his story.

Katerina and her 16-year-old sister Abigail were away at an elite boarding school when their family were engulfed in flames.

In the aftermath of the attack it was revealed at least three of the four victims had blunt force head wounds and smelled of gasoline.

Suspect: Wint's murder trial has been delayed until December. He appeared in court last week alongside his attorneys who want to speak to a witness who claims a man running away from the family's stolen Porsche did not look like their client

In July the lead investigator on the case, Detective Jeffrey Owens, testified that, according to their autopsies, Savvas Savopoulos and Figueroa had been strangled.

The family mansion sits on Embassy Row in the nation's capital, a short walk from Joe Biden's house and the Clinton residence. It is now surrounded by a metal fence, the doors are padlocked and the windows have been boarded up.

Mr Savopoulos was the CEO of American Iron Works.

No one else has been charged in the slayings, even though police have said they believe Wint did not act alone.

In arguing that authorities had not established probable cause, Wint's public defender, Arthur Ago, cited a lack of physical evidence linking Wint to the crime other than the DNA from the vest and from a pizza crust at the scene. Ago characterized that DNA evidence as 'weak.'

Ago also focused on inconsistencies in the statements of Savopoulos' assistant, who told police that he delivered the $40,000 to the house, and he suggested that police did not question the assistant aggressively enough.
