Whatever Happened to Wet Wet Wet (2024)

We send out press releases from time to time, and we figure our loyal Substack readers might want to read them, too. This one went out on Monday, and it’s a sad one about conditions at our once beloved radio station.

Whatever Happened to Wet Wet Wet (1)

KDHX is taking on water, literally. Reports and photographs from inside the offices and production facilities of 88.1 KDHX, at 3524 Washington Avenue in St. Louis, paint a dire picture of a roof and/or pipes leaking on critical equipment, production spaces, and staff offices.

With the torrential rains of last week, leaks have emerged on the second floor. However, volunteers (who must remain anonymous for fear of retribution) have observed plastic coverings and damage as early as July 6, days prior to the July 9 storms. See attached photos.

Facebook user "Johnny Diamond," a pseudonym for an insider at KDHX, stated, "The lack of basic maintenance of the KDHX building and equipment has reached an absurd level. [Director of Volunteer Connections] Andea Dunn has been forced from her office because the roof is leaking so bad that it looks like there's a sprinkler system turned on every time it rains. They have now installed an iron security gate in the rack room doorway so that they can leave the door open and still get air flow but keep anyone from entering the room. The AC for the room is still not functioning and there's not enough money to even get a service call to find out how much it will cost to fix the problem.”

Reports of a failure in the AC unit that cools the critical second-floor equipment racks, computers and hard drives have circulated for weeks. Now damage to the KDHX facilities appears to be spreading.

The situation is tragic and ironic. One of the arguments for moving KDHX to its new home in Grand Center was a leaking roof and flooding basem*nt at the original Magnolia Avenue studios.

Moreover, in 2019, during the crisis that saw the purging of black staff and volunteers, and allegations of harassment and mismanagement against Executive Director Kelly Wells, it was revealed that the roof at the new Grand Center location had significant leaks.

STLPR reported: “In addition to the mortgage, equipment and remodeling costs, the bills include upkeep and maintenance on the building, including fixing a leaking roof.

“[Darian] Wigfall said the roof at the Larry J. Weir Building on Washington Avenue leaks constantly. The moisture was damaging to the equipment, Wigfall said, and dangerous for the people performing. A leak would be patched up, Wigfall said, but the next time it rained, there would be another leak.”

Kelly Wells claimed the leak was fixed. Five years later, one can only hope she kept the receipts.

On the heels of reports that KDHX has not paid staff in over three months, these current threats to the station’s critical assets and essential functions are troubling.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the KDHX board of directors continue to slow walk a lawsuit that seeks to seat three new members to the board. A new trial date has been set for August 27, 2024.

It is time for the board of KDHX to fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities and act. Quit wasting resources on defending a lawsuit to bar qualified candidates from a board much in need of new voices. Stop the harm being done daily to staff, volunteers, material assets, and the community.

Resolve this crisis by meeting with all of the community and finding new leadership to stabilize the station – before the damage is irrevocable.

We’d been looking forward to July 27 (also known as International Al Swacker Day) for the hearing before a judge in the case of several KDHX volunteers v. the KDHS Board of Directors. Guess what? The lawyers for KDHX asked for a continuance, and now we have to wait until August 27. Lawsuits in person never work the way they do on TV. Though maybe they work the way Charles Dickens wrote about them.

Hey, we’re planning an organized round-up of all the former KDHX djs and where you can catch up on the music they love, but we’re starting today by just remind you that Ital K does his English Pound Sundays show every week and if you can’t listen live, you can download his show for two weeks after it airs.

Many thanks to Allen Dahm, former host of Bittersweet Melody for doing the work to get us the following concert info.
