The Bucks are adding Delon Wright in free agency.
TheMilwaukee Buckshaveagreedto a one-year, $3.3 million minimum contract withDelon Wright, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Wright, 32, was a player theBucks pursued ahead of the trade deadline when he was still a member of the Washington Wizards. Ultimately, the team settled on a trade for Patrick Beverley, who was with the Philadelphia 76ers at the time, due to his smaller contract. The Wizards were seeking future second-round draft assets for Wright, who was on an expiring $8.2 million contract.
After failing to find a trade partner for the veteran point guard at the trade deadline, theWizards ended up buying Wright outof his contract, paving the way for him to sign with the Miami Heat for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. There, Wright played in 14 games and averaged 5.4 points, 2.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 36.7 percent from three-point range.
The Bucks will become the ninth different organization that Wright has played for since being drafted 20th overall in 2015. Although he may not be the most athletic or explosive guard in the league, Wright has always provided stability and leadership wherever he has been. With the Bucks, the well-traveled guard will be a reliable option for head coach Doc Rivers behind All-Star Damian Lillard on the team’s depth chart.
A decision to sign Wright to a one-year contract likely signals that the Bucks will not be retaining Beverley, who is also a free agent this offseason. Beverley earned himself afour-game suspension after Milwaukee was eliminated from postseason contention after forcefully throwing a basketball multiple times at spectators and for his inappropriate interaction with a reporter during his postgame media availability.
Despite his defensive contributions, Beverley’s antics and upcoming suspension have seemed to result in the Bucks looking elsewhere for production.
Throughout the entirety of his career, Wright has always been a steady contributor in the backcourt. In a total of 508 games with nine different organizations, Wright has averaged 7.0 points, 3.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game. There is never a lot of talk centered around Wright and his play, yet the veteran always seems to find himself making an impact on his team’s chances of winning.
The Bucks are hopeful that Wright will be able to provide some much-needed depth in the backcourt alongside Lillard as they look to work their way back up to title-contention status.

Milwaukee Bucks Steal Point Guard Away from the Miami Heat in Free Agency
TheMilwaukee Bucks, to put it bluntly, had one of the weirdest seasons in the NBA last year. AcquiringDamian Lillardvia trade from the Portland Trailblazers forJrue Holiday (Grayson Allen was sent to the Phoenix Suns) was their most noteworthy move in regard to their player personnel.

However, the trade was done so late in the offseason that Lillard and his new team barely had any time to prepare for the season together.Of course, there was also the highly debated and questionable hiring ofAdrian Griffinas the Bucks’ head coach. During his brief stint with the Bucks, it was clear that there was not much of a defensive strategy and that he was quickly losing the locker room.
Of course, Griffin was fired despite being 30-13 and replaced by Doc Rivers.
The Milwaukee Bucks Struggled to Find an Identity in the 2023-24 NBA Season

WhenMike Budenholzerwas the head coach of the Bucks, Milwaukee had a reputation for being both an elite offensive and defensive team. It was clear, back then, thatGiannis Antetokounmpowas the primary star and the rest of the team fed off of him.
The addition of Lillard, while a smart move to make, was done too late in the offseason for the two stars to find the best way to play together. As a result, the Bucks found themselves without a specific identity last season.
While Giannis still dominated and Lillard was voted as an NBA All-Star Game starter, the product on the floor was far less than what was expected. After Griffin’s firing, the Bucks went 16-19 under Rivers.
To be fair, health played a significant role in the Bucks’ struggles. Giannis, Lillard, andKhris Middletonplayed only six games together after Rivers took over. With their stars dealing with various injuries, it became apparent very quickly that Milwaukee’s roster was not properly constructed to be serious contenders.

One of the players that Milwaukee brought in last season to help right the ship was point guard Patrick Beverley, whom they acquired in a trade for Cameron Payne. While Beverley played well in Milwaukee and helped improve the defense (if only slightly), he is too expensive for the Bucks to bring back going forward.
Instead, the Bucks turned to free agency where they can only sign players to veteran minimum contracts. Earlier today,Eric Nehm ofThe Athleticreportedthat Milwaukee had agreed to sign point guard Delon Wright:
In their first move in free agency, the Bucks found a way to help shore up that first need [guard size] by signing Delon Wright to a one-year deal, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.
A six-foot-five point guard, Wright split last season between the Washington Wizards and Heat. He averaged 4.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in 47 games.
In the past, Wright has also played for the Toronto Raptors, Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, and Atlanta Hawks.
A career 35.4% three-point shooter, the Bucks hope that Wright can bring some needed sharpshooting and defense off of the bench.
